Skincare & Our Emotions
Did you know that there is a strong connection between our mind and our skin? Some interesting research indicates that how we feel can affect how our skin looks and even factor into what sort of skin conditions we may suffer from.
Our skin can easily give away what’s going on in our hearts and minds. Skin is our largest and most visible organ and therefore we often notice the effects of our feelings in our skin before anywhere else.
Our skin is affected by many factors, including our environment, our general overall health, and the food we eat. But research has shown that perhaps our mind has the greatest influence. Harvard Women’s Health Watch has found that “the bond between skin and mind has deep roots”. The connection is thought to be so strong that there’s a name for the field: “psychodermatology”.
In a further study in 2014, researchers examined the “brain-skin connection” and found that mental, physical, and emotional pressure severely affects our skin. They found that when we’re under stress we release hormones that irritate the nerves in our skin. This encourages inflammation and decreases blood flow.
This research has been supported by many dermatologists who have found that patients visiting to treat a skin condition often have a related psychological problem that can, at times, make it difficult for standards treatments to work.
When we are happy our skin glows. This is because our internal happiness affects it. This is a natural process. When we are happy mentally and internally our outer appearance changes, allowing our body to express positive energy. When we are not happy internally, all the creams, lotions and moisturisers won’t help our appearance because our negative feelings will be written all over our face.
Stress, anger, depression, fear and embarrassment are some of the fundamental negative emotions that we all go through at some stage in our lives. These negative emotions can lead to skin conditions such as acne, eczema, inflammation, and infection. Sometimes life will give you lemons. We all have to strive to have the courage to accept these challenges that life throws at us. If we let these challenges affect us too much then not only will our overall mood and happiness decline, but it will also have a negative impact on our skin.
Everyone is different and may suffer from different skin conditions in response to their emotions. However, there are some emotions that are often linked to specific skin reactions. For example, if you have extreme anger or anxiety the likely skin reaction will be hives, allergic reactions, itching, and/or inflammation. When you’re under extreme stress the likely skin reactions will be acne and/or eczema.
The key is to do our best to balance both our emotions and our skincare routine. We can balance our emotions and relieve stress via activities such as exercise, eating well, positive thinking, affirmations, kindness and generosity. Mindfulness-based techniques like meditation and yoga are particularly useful in managing our stress-levels. These activities can help you navigate stressful times more effectively, with fewer complications showing up on your skin. Though it may sound difficult when you’re stressed or overworked, staying consistent with your skincare routine will also help your skin resist any emotional effects.
