The Bee in Beauty
The world is moving faster every day. Thanks to the emergence of technology, we have seen a great increase in the speed of development across all aspects of life. Among these developments, protecting, repairing and enhancing our skin is one that we all are thankful for.
Every now and then, a new product or ingredient is discovered that can turn an industry on its head. One that shows huge promise, has very practical application and enough proven research behind it to spark a frenzy. In the world of skincare we’ve seen this before with the discovery of retinoids, Coenzyme Q10 and benzoyl peroxide. Today I’d like to talk about the discovery that started us on our journey here at Beenigma – bee venom.
What’s the buzz about Bee venom?
You may not have heard of Apitherapy before, but it’s a form of bee venom therapy that has been practiced in various forms for thousands of years throughout ancient Egypt, Greece, India and China. It has been used to treat a wide variety of ailments including aiding in the recovery of rheumatoid arthritis, enlarged prostates and some cancers.
Only recently however has bee venom been researched as a way to reduce wrinkles and repair damaged skin. Bee venom is the latest and greatest anti-aging skincare ingredient and it’s here to stay.
How does it work?
It’s really quite simple. Our skin is a very remarkable organ. When we get sunburn our skin sheds the layers and regrows healthy skin underneath. When a bee stings us, our skin reacts by swelling to protect our body. The area where you are stung becomes smooth and soft to the touch. And this is where the magic lies.
You see, when we apply bee venom topically in concentrated doses, our skin is tricked into thinking it is stung and goes into defense mode, producing collagen and elastin – the building blocks of youthful skin. As we age, our body naturally produces less and less collagen and elastin. The magic of using the right bee venom in the right formulation is that we can fight back against this decrease in collagen and elastin and as a result fight against fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin.
But what about the poor bees?
Thanks to research and development we are now able to extract bee venom using a patented process that doesn’t harm or kill the bees. The bees are attracted to a glass panel that has a light electric current running through it, they then sting the glass leaving behind a small amount of their bee venom. As the bees cannot penetrate the glass, they fly away with their abdomens intact. The bee venom is then carefully dried and stored to maintain its purity. Each gram of bee venom takes about 10,000 bee stings and, due to the meticulous nature of this process, costs up to $450 per gram. That’s 10x the price of gold! Here at Beenigma we take the preservation of our environment very seriously and our research into apitherapy actually helps to stimulate and cultivate bee colonies. The bees help us and we help them!
More bee venom magic
“Bee venom consists of a potent combination of enzymes, peptides and amino acids’
- Ayona De Mel, consultant dermatologist, South Wales, MD.
Bee venom has been shown to be effective in reducing the negative menopausal effects on our skin such as puffiness, dryness and skin-tag formations. Additionally, bee venom has shown to have cumulative effects meaning the more you use it, the better the results.
You may have heard that Kate Middleton, The Duchess Camilla, Posh Spice, The Kardashians and Gwyneth Paltrow all use bee venom cream as an anti-aging solution and swear by its amazing effects.
Well you don’t have to take their word for it. The clinical research is even better!
In a trial conducted by scientists in Perth, Australia involving 14 women of ages between 50 and 59, all of them stated that the bee venom improved the texture of their skin, decreased lines, wrinkles and dryness, leaving their skin feeling, in their words, between 10-15 years younger.
Here at Beenigma we sent our Beenigma ‘all-in-one’ cream to Medicus Research, an independent research facility in Los Angeles, to further understand the benefits and results of using our skincare. 30 women tested the product over 30 days and the results couldn’t have been more exciting!
This independent Beenigma clinical study showed a reduction in wrinkle depth around the eyes by 52% and on the face by 34%. The test women also reported exceptional results – 95% said their skin appeared more youthful, 90% said the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles had reduced, and 85% said their skin felt lifted.
