The science behind the sting
Honey bee venom (Apitoxin) contains at least 18 active substances, of these the enzymes Phoslipase A2, hyaluronidase and the other proteins and peptides Melittin, Apamine Adolapin and protease inhibitor all play a vital role in stimulating the skin to react in a way that causes it to replenish itself naturally.
Phosolipase A2: Some 10-13% of peptides and it is the most destructive component of apitoxin. It is an enzyme which dissolves the skin cell membrane (phospholipids which cellular membranes are made of) and allows other ingredients to penetrate into the skin cell, resulting in a product working more effectively. It also causes decreased blood pressure and inhibits blood coagulation.
Hyaluronidase: 1-3% of Apitoxin. When a bee stings, the hyaluronidase breaks down hyaluronic acid polymers that serve as intercellular cement, tissues soften and then the venom can spread, enhancing the delivery of different active ingredients across the skin barrier.
As we grow older, the hyaluronic matrix responsible for the moisture retention in our skin becomes tougher and significantly decreased skin penetrability. Hyaluronidase accelerates disintegration of the old molecules and activates the synthesis of new molecules of hyaluronic acid by skin fibroblasts, thus improving skin penetrability. Hyaluronidase causes hyaluronic acid in the body to become acetylglucosamine, important to tissue functions such as hydration, lubrication, transport, cell migration, cell function and differentiation.
Proteins and Peptides
Melittin : Is the principal active component of Apitoxin (Bee Venom) 40-70% and is a powerful stimulator of phospholipase A2. Melittin increases the permeability of cell membranes, this effect results in marked functional changes of the red blood cells and supports normal blood circulation in the deepest layers of skin, thus improving metabolism, it also exhibits potent anti-microbial effects. Melittin is a strong anti-inflammatory agent and induces the production of cortisol in the body, Normal cortisol is essential for skin health, stimulating cell regeneration as well as elastin and collagen production
Apamin: 1-3% Apitoxin, Apamin increases cortisol production in the adrenal gland. Apamin is a mild neurotoxin, one of the unique peptides of bee venom, has beneficial effects on the central and peripheral nervous system and stimulates the secretion of serotonin and dopamine, which increases the sense of well-being in humans.
Adolapin, comprising 2-5% of the peptides, acts as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic because it blocks cyclooxygenase, metabolism of arachidonic acid to form prostaglandins. Prostaglandins regulate the body's inflammatory response.
Protease Inhibitor: Content approx 0.8%. According to New Scientist, prior to menopause, oestrogen production declines and proteases enzymes work harder, which removes elastic collagen faster than it is replaced - so the protease inhibitor from the bee venom would in effect be limiting the protease enzymes therefore containing the elastic collagen
